- How to Measure Roof PitchFour ways to find pitch — attic, roof, phone angle or plans — and how to check your reading.
- Minimum Roof Pitch by Roofing MaterialThe lowest slope the building code allows for shingles, tile, metal, slate and more.
- How to Plan Deck FramingLedger, joists, beams and posts: the order to plan them and where the span rules come from.
- Deck Board SpacingHow wide to gap wood and composite deck boards, side to side and end to end.
Built around one roof and one deck
The roofing tools share the same numbers: the pitch you find on the roof pitch calculator gives the rafter multiplier the rafter length calculator uses, and the same pitch feeds the roof area and roofing squares estimate. Each page links to the next step, so you can go from a tape-measure reading to an order quantity without re-entering anything.
The deck calculator turns length, width and board size into a board count with a waste allowance, plus joists and screws, and lays it out as a shopping list you can copy or print.
Imperial or metric
Every measurement calculator here has an imperial/metric switch. Results are estimates for planning and ordering. Structural sizes such as joist spans depend on your local building code, so check those with your building department before you build.
